Helpp

What is HELPP?

HELPP (Helping to Empower Loving Parents and Partners) is a support group for the parents and partners of Jewish people with an addiction (drugs, alcohol, gambling etc). It was established in July 1999.

Why is it needed?

When a family member has on-going problems caused by an addiction, the whole family has a problem. People try very hard to help their loved one and also try to change that person's behaviour.

What they often find is that the problematic behaviours worsen and the parent or partner ends up feeling more powerless, guilty and isolated.

HELPP gives the parent or partner an opportunity to stop feeling isolated and talk with others who are dealing with the same dilemmas. The group learns from the experiences of its members, with input from experienced professionals.

Finally, members of the Jewish community have their own particular issues and concerns to explore, for which this group provides a safe and supportive environment.

What sort of group is it?

It is a private, non-profit confidential group. Privacy is respected and people use only their first names.

Who are the group leaders?

The group is led by psychotherapist Roselie Freeman and psychologist Nathan Kotler. They have many years of experience dealing with the issues of addicted people and of those who care for them.

How often does the group meet?

HELPP meets fortnightly on a weekday evening in the south-eastern suburbs, from 7.30pm to 9.00pm.

What does it cost?

There are no fees charged. At each session, group members are asked to make a small donation to the Jewish Care Addiction Recovery Fund.

Finally

HELPP is run under the auspices of Jewish Care (Vic.) Inc. and is supported by the Jewish Community Council of Victoria
