The overseas students'
program was established in 1968.
The whole idea behind this project was to strengthen the relationship
between Israel and the Diaspora.
The program has been very successful and we have 18,000 alumni.
The program is designed for English speaking students who would
like to spend one year or one semester studying abroad. Students studying
in our program also get academic credits for their studies.
The program starts
with a 7 week Intensive Hebrew Ulpan, usually held at the end of July
the beginning of August (the exact dates are determined by the Jewish
holidays).
In this Ulpan students study 5 days a week Sunday to Thursday 08:30 -
13:00.
This is the largest Ulpan Tel Aviv University offers and successful
completion of the course awards the student 6 credits.
The academic year starts in October. (Again the date is determined
by the Jewish holidays. The University always starts one week after Sukkot).
Our semester is 11 weeks long and each course meets for 4 hours a week.
For each academic course students get 3 credits.
Students can also chose to come for the Spring semester. The
program starts in January again with an Intensive Ulpan but this time
the Ulpan is only four weeks long. Students study 5 days a week 5 hours
per Sunday to Thursday 08:30 - 13:00
As opposed to the Summer Ulpan this Ulpan is mainly designed for students
coming to our program. Again successful completion of the course will
grant the students 6 credits.
During the academic year/semester students are required to take 5 courses.
The academic areas which are covered in our program are:
Jewish Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Israel Studies, The Arts, Social
Sciences, General Studies and Hebrew Studies.
In addition to
the academic program there are 4 counselors living in the dorms with the
students. These counselors are all Israeli students whose job is to look
after the well fare of the students and enrich their experience while
they are in Israel.
There are 3 major trips that are organized for the students. 1 day trip
to Jerusalem,
3 day trip to the North and 3 day Trip to the South. The counselors issue
a monthly activity calendar which specifies all of the activities available
to the students. These activities include Seminars, Lectures, Films and
Parties.
The program is closely monitored by our academic office and social one.
We make it our business to know exactly how the students feel and help
whenever it is possible.
Our main target is to turn our offices to a home away from home.
We don't have reception hours and there is always a counselor on duty
24 hours a day. The students have access to the tel. numbers of the counselors
and are welcome to come to each one of them for anything they need.
In the months June and July we also offer a 5 week Summer session in which
the students have an option of either studying Hebrew (for beginners level
only) or chose 2-3 courses which we offer: Arab Israeli conflict, Israeli
Politics, Modern Jewish History, Int. to Judaism.
Again in addition to classes we also offer 2 3 day trips one to the South
and Jerusalem and one to the North.
In addition to the above mentioned programs we also offer an MA program
in Middle Eastern History.
This program is two years long and successful completion of the program
awards the students an MA degree from the Humanities dept. of Tel Aviv
University. Qualified students with at least a B average in their
BA studies are required to complete 9 seminars, Hebrew and Arabic and
also write a thesis.
