HECHSHER
A hechsher is a rabbinical symbol or seal of approval on a food product that shows it meets Jewish dietary laws, called kashrut.
What a Hechsher Does
- Verifies ingredients: It proves that all items inside the package are allowed under Jewish law.
- Checks equipment: It ensures factories clean and manage machinery so meat and dairy never mix, and no forbidden foods touch the equipment.
- Uses supervisors: Certifying groups send trained inspectors, called mashgichim, to check food plants and kitchens regularly.
- OU Symbol: A capital letter U inside a circle, run by the Orthodox Union.
- OK Symbol: A capital letter K inside a circle.
